Solar Panels, Batteries and Generators

Solar panels, batteries and generators bring a number of advantages in terms of cost savings and resilience.

Solar panels enable power to be generated for either use in the premises or for sale back to the grid.

Batteries can store electricity whether it is generated by solar panels or fed from the elecricity supply. These bring a number of opportunities…

  • Excess electricity generated by solar panels can be stored and used later when the sun is not shining
  • Electricity can be stored in the batteries to provide a supply in the event of a power cut
  • The batteries can be charged using off peak, cheaper electricity and this stored energy from the battery can be used to supply appliances at peak times reducing the spend when electricity is at its most expensive.

It is possible to install a diesel generator to provide a backup electrivity supply in the event of a power cut.

To allow power to be sourced from the battery instead of the mains (in the case of a power cut or to reduce mains compsumption at times of peak rates) it is necessary to install a Smart Home Panel (SHP). An SHP can be programmed and controlled from a smart phone app. An SHP allows you to…

  • Select when to charge the batteries (for example at times of off peak rates)
  • Select which house wiring circuits are to be supplied with battery backup power in the event of a power cut
  • Select when certain house wiring circuits are to be powered from the battery rather than mains (for example at times of peak electricity rates).
